improvements. Your engine room is a lot nicer place to be. The morale of your Refrigeration team should be a lot better. Don’t forget that last “S”: Sustain. All of this improvement can be lost in a few months without effort allocated toward keeping things going. If you are the Manager of a Refrigeration Department, step up and do your part. Hold your team accountable to keep up the good work. In the long run, the whole team will be glad you did!

Shadow boards not only define where an item belongs, but they also provide a visual que when a tool is missing or out of place. Labels should be used for shelves, cabinets and bins. The fourth “S”, Standardize, should come easy. We all live in a regulated environ ment. We have to comply with PSM, RMP and maybe even the Department of Homeland Security’s CFATS program. We have Operating Procedures, and PMs set up for our system and its components. Standardize your 5S program by baking 5S principles into your PSM program, in your SOPs and PMs. If you have made it this far, you must be feeling pretty good about all of the
systems. If you have not secured your engine room the fittings you purchase for the ammonia system can become misappropriated. You should have an adequate supply of threaded fittings secured in a lockable cabinet. Establish a tool crib for Refrigeration. If you have a hard time keeping unauthorized person nel out of your engine room, lock down the tool crib. In my experience, Refrigera tion personnel are good at taking care of departmental tools. Help them out by securing the space. Now you are ready for the Set in Order step. This is where you set up a place for everything, so that everything can be in its place. There should be racks for ladders and hoses. There should be adequate storage for individual PPE, tools and other essential belongings. Utilize shadow
