The Shade Tree Mechanic volume XLXII SERVICE
I don’t know We live in the information age. I got access to so much stuff on my phone it’s plum crazy. I drive the ms. a little crazy sometimes. Like the other night I was watchin a commercial and this here guy bets this other guy a hundred dollars if he call tell him what this little frozen ball is in his freeze. Well the guy guesses “Scotch Egg”. As it turns out it’s a meatball. Anyway, I aint never heard of a Scotch Egg. Now Scotch and eggs aren’t a bad breakfast, you know hair of the dog and all. So’s I think to mys self “hey wonder what a scotch egg is?” So’s I holler “Hey Google, what’s a scotch egg”. It says “A Scotch egg is a hard boiled egg, wrapped with bacon coated and deep fried”. Wow, who woulda guessed? Then I started thinking that Technically if
you drank scotch while you were eating your scotch egg, it would be a “Scotch Egg and Scotch”. I find that funny as heck, but you know, that just may be me. So the point is, my phone has just tons of information. Yours does too. Well the other night I had a contractor in and I asked him to install a new controller on my level probe. He got it mounted ok. I asked him if he calibrated it. He told me he didn’t know how. I wasn’t being a wisebu@@, but I looked at him and said “do you have your phone?”. He said yes. But didn’t pull his phone out. So after five minutes, I kinda lost my patience and went over to the box, pulled out the calibration instructions, and took them to him. I told him“They ship the instructions in the box”.
I wasn’t overly happy that he didn’t know. I was downright miffed that he didn’t open his phone, go to the manufacturer’s YouTube channel, and watch the video. But I think it’s a generation thing. The kids immediately open their phone. I look for a book (and my readin glasses), Junior just calls Bobby and asks him. I guess whatever method you choose its ok. But givin the resources we got at our fingertips, “I don’t know” should never be the answer. Hopefully, next time that service tech will say “not sure let me check my phone”. It’ll save me a few aspirin and hopefully get me a few more minutes under the shade tree. The shade tree grows outside of the little town of Broughton, Ohio. Where everyone is always welcome, the beer is always cold, and something is always needin fixin.
